Southern
Morocco is a barren, desert landscape
broken up by the lush river valleys of the
Dad?, Dr? and Ziz. Dotted with palm
oases, overlooked by startling red kasbahs
and the vast desert sky, these valleys
were once caravan routes linking Morocco
with the riches of the Sahara and West
Africa.
Ouarzazate,
the start of the Kasbah Trail, is a good
base from which to explore. There are two
main routes from there into the desert,
through the beautiful oases of the Draa
Valley to Zagora.
The other via the Dades
Valley, with its magnificent gorges,
then through the Ziz
Valley to Erfoud and the Dunes
of Merzouga.
