Erfoud
lies on the river Ziz. The French built the town, in
the 1930s, as their administrative centre for the
biggest oasis in Morocco. The desert settlement of
Merzouga, about 30 miles (50km) to the south, is
famed for the spectacular Erg Chebbi sand dunes.
